Environmental Education
In accordance with one of our main objectives, we can offer educational tours of the Sanctuary to schools or any other group of interested people. To accompany this we have developed a range of educational materials in line with the schools curriculum. Wildlife Clubs and other volunteers can take part in conservation workcamps. Buses are not allowed around the Sanctuary, but we can organise a game drive in our own vehicles.

Our New Facility - The Environmental Education Centre
Environmental Education Centre

The KRS EEC is uniquely sited within the Khama Rhino Sanctuary. There is a large multi-purpose hall. There are two 24-bed student dormitories and there is accommodation for up to eight teachers or supervisors (2 per room - ensuite facilities).  There is also a self-catered camping area with running water and a small ablution block.

There are several activity areas and there is an investigative nature trail. There is an opportunity for groups to experience game drives with knowledgeable game scouts.

Displays are being prepared and enhanced. Printed materials and resources are being built up. Video materials support the programme.

There is a team of energetic education officers and facilitators which works with student groups and is continually designing and testing original environmental material and related activities.

Our Basic Philosophy is governed by four principles:

  • There are no lectures.

  • Activities are hands-on.

  • Activities are learner-centred.

  • Activities are experiential.

We use a multi-discipline approach with activities that range across all subject areas.

Our program is multi-levelled (lower primary, upper primary, junior high school, senior high school, tertiary and adult).

We key our material and activities to the environmental curriculum wherever possible.

Our goal is to send students and their teachers back to their classrooms with a range of experiences and ideas to enhance their studies. We challenge them to carry out further projects and investigations in the realm of environmentalism.

RESOURCES:

  • A series of booklets already in print (thanks to the Environmental Heritage Foundation of Botswana Trust and a team of teachers and educators) and is under continual revision, refinement and expansion.
  • A series of activities keyed to these booklets and to environmental curriculum areas and issues which engage the students in enjoyable outdoor pursuits and give them memorable experiences on which to base their further reading and academic exercises.
  • A full range of fun-filled activities and amusing games that differ from what students normally encounter.

We at KRS EEC feel that our facility is an extension of the classroom to the outdoors - to the environment. As a result, we encourage visits during the school term and during the school week wherever possible. Our facility can also be used for conferences at the weekends.
